re: Send a Message to Mayor Villaraigosa

Hi Lillian,

You are right that there is a feeling at city hall that nuclear disarmament is a federal issue, not quite appropriate perhaps for the city to take up.

When I finally (after 5 weeks) got through to the right aide to Mayor Villaraigosa, he was quite willing to put the Mayors for Peace Cities Appeal petition on the Mayor's desk for signature, but when I said that we (the LAANDC) would like to talk to someone about breaking loose some of an aide's valuable time to help us activate the Mayors for Peace network locally, he said he questioned if Los Angeles wanted to start a Foreign Affairs desk.  So I said, well, think what just one atom bomb can do to property values! and we got a good laugh on that.

So it will be uphill, but not because people are against nuclear disarmament.  It is more a matter of how best to allocate limited city hall resources.  Because everyone is already on our side, I think our best bet is a steady gentle pressure.
