Joy is the net of love by which we catch souls.  - Mother Teresa

This is a time of new beginnings.  Nelson Mandela said, "I am the captain of my soul."  With the new year, we start the walk on our path of 2014.  We are approaching Martin Luther King Jr. Day.  The Season for Nonviolence (SNV) is about to start.

The  SNV is the 64-day period from January 30th to April 4th memorializing the dates Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr. were assassinated by focusing on their legacy of nonviolence.  During the Season, the United Nations, citizen groups and churches in more than 900 cities, all 50 states and 67 countries host programs designed to increase the understanding and use of nonviolent principles to heal, transform, and  empower our lives and communities.  This is a time to both reflect on nonviolence and to act on peacebuilding.

On our call, we will explore our visions of peace for 2014 and share those visions with each other.  We want to hear from you.  When you open your heart, what do you see for 2014?  What do you dare to hope?  What will be your peace work in 2014?  What is your part in making the dream of Dr. King real?

Bring your ideas, your thoughts, a poem or a song or a quote, bring your peace-abilities, bring your list of peace and peace video resources, but most of all, bring your self and your joy to this call.

The sun does not shine for a few trees and flowers, but for the wide world's joy. - Henry Ward Beecher

Season for Nonviolence Actions

During this Season for Nonviolence, please make some time to:

  • Write and call your member of Congress and our two Senators to urge them to cosponsor the  Department of Peacebuilding Act (HR 808)
  • Write and call your member of Congress and your two Senators to urge them to cosponsor the Youth PROMISE Act (HR 1318 & S 1307).
  • Participate in your local Martin Luther King Day celebrations & in local Season for Nonviolence programs.
  • Volunteer at the CA Peace Alliance booth during the upcoming California Democratic Party (CDP) Convention in Los Angeles (March 7 - 9, 2014).  We especially need your help on March 7th and March 8th as we work to make peacebuilding a part of the 2014 CDP Platform and as we seek more cosponsors for the Department of Peacebuilding Act.  If you can volunteer your time, please e-mail Nancy at sunmntain@aol.com with the approximate times you  can  volunteer and with your cell phone number.  Additionally, any donations toward the booth fee are appreciated.  Please send a check to Nancy Merritt, marked "CDP Convention" and mail it to Nancy at PO Box 6032, Albany, CA 94706. We hope to see as many Northern and Southern Californians there as possible.  It's not too soon to start planning for this intriguing and fun ritual in the process of democracy.  For more information, see www.cadem.org.
