Creating a High-Level Committee for UN Offices in San Francisco

As part of the UN70 anniversary efforts, the formation of a high-level committee can be created for an ongoing effort to bring United Nations department offices to San Francisco.  There are currently no UN offices in San Francisco or California.  UN offices are located in major cities such as New York, Geneva, Nairobi and Vienna. The United Nations Environment Programme Regional Office for North America is in Washington, D.C. There is a global network of 63 United Nations Information Centres including Washington, D.C. and Mexico City.  A high-level committee could work with the Mayor’s Office of Workforce and Economic Development to bring permanent UN offices to San Francisco.

Potential members for this committee are: Gavin Newsom, CA Lt. Governor; Jane Wales, President and CEO, World Affairs Council of Northern California; Doug Shorenstein, Chairman & CEO Shorenstein Co.; Gillian Martin Sorensen, Senior Advisor, United Nations Foundation; Michael Cohen, Senior Partner, Strada Investment Group; Joaquin Torres, Deputy Director, Mayors Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

In July 2009, The City of San Francisco unveiled a proposal to create a UN Global Compact Center devoted to the research and development related to climate change and sustainable and clean technologies. At a press conference announcing the plans, Mayor Gavin Newsom said: "Locating a UN Global Compact Center in San Francisco will reinforce our city's commitment to global justice and sustainability." Mayor Newsom added that the Center is envisioned as an international destination for researchers, corporations, foundations, civil society organizations and others dedicated to addressing climate change and related issues. Gavin Power, Deputy Director of the UN Global Compact, said: "We are excited to partner with the City of San Francisco to work towards securing a sustainability center for the UN Global Compact. California, in general, and San Francisco, in particular, has been at the forefront of environmental sustainability for many years, and all the right ingredients are here. This would also have poignant significance, given that San Francisco is the birthplace of the United Nations." The Center as proposed would be built on San Francisco's Hunters Point Shipyard, which is being revitalized as an urban green business and residential district. Next steps call for the City of San Francisco to work with the UN Global Compact Office to guide project development and fundraising efforts. At the time of announcement, the completion date was projected to be 2012. The project’s plans as far as is known are on hold. The 2015 UN70 activates could be harnessed to restart this development process and add an “annex” office in the UN Plaza Mid-Market Street area.
