2014 April 15 Core Collaborators Meeting Notes
6:00 PM - 7:30 at First Unitarian Universalist Church in SF
In attendance:
Jim Barnett of the Humanist Association * Cathy Corcoran of American Association of University Women * Liz Cormier of UU United Nations Office * Larry Danos of UU UNO *
Sandy Eaton of UNA-SF * Scott Haeger of UNA-SF * Mary Jane Mikuriya of Servas * Eddie Ramirez of San Francisco Bay Area Veterans * Marvin (sp?) of UU UNO.
Agenda: a) Structure, b) UN 70th
Structure
* our mission statement: “Our mission is to promote the goals of the UN in the Bay Area” we explain by quoting the preamble of the UN Charter and pointing to the MDG’s
* our corresponding tagline” “Promoting the goals of the UN in the Bay Area”
* The Bay Area is the standard nine counties that ring SF Bay: Marin, Sonoma, Napa, Solano, Contra Costa, Alameda, Santa Clara, San Mateo, San Francisco.
* We are a project of UNA-SF, currently with Co-Chairs, Roger Eaton and Elizabeth Weinberg.
* Our membership is made up of organizations who agree we can post their logo and mission statement (with a link to their website) on our website. Organizations may also affiliate instead of join the UNA SF Bay Area Council of Organizations. Individuals may also affiliate. New member organizations must be OKd by all existing members.
* The Core Collaborators Committee is our central executive committee. Individual members of organizations COO Members and affiliates are welcome to join the Core Collaborators. At some point we may want to limit the number of Core Collaborators, but not yet.
* Decision making is by consensus with a two-thirds super-majority voting fallback if after several (shall we say at least three?) meetings plus side-bars a small minority cannot be convinced and the super-majority feels it is important to go ahead.
UN 70th
* Click here for the latest version of the letter we plan to take to City Hall. Stephen McNeil will provide contact information for the people we want to see there. The letter is on our new stationery with our tagline and specifying we are a project of UNA-SF.
* In a sidebar discussion on April 16th, Stephen McNeil and Roger Eaton propose that we need an active committee of three to five persons for each decided item on our UN 70th agenda. This is 3-5 people who concentrate on the one event, not spreading themselves over several. Stephen will see if he can contact Charlotte Schulz and will look into possible contacts with the Veterans group that administers the War Memorial.
* Our top goals are 1) UN 70th at the War Memorial, 2) UN 69th at First Unitarian Universalist and 3) Fundraising parties at the Fairmont for both years.
* The UN 69th at the UU will be celebrated on Sunday Oct 19, 2014. The morning service will be handled by the new Minister at UU and will be UN related. After more discussion between Roger and Liz Cormier, it looks this way: we will aim to fill the Thomas Starr King and Martin Luther King rooms for lunch, max 270. Blocking out the afternoon, we will have lunch from 12:30-1:45 or so and then assemble in the Sanctuary until 3:30 for keynote plus song, dance and theatre (amusing skits). We will have tickets that cover lunch. Perhaps the second part of the afternoon will be free and we will aim to bring in more people. Proceeds will go towards UN 70th. There will be a meeting Thursday the 24th at the UU Church to continue the discussion.
* We will secure a room - possibly the Garden Room - in the Fairmont for the true 69th Anniversary on the evening of Friday Oct 24. Dinner and fundraising towards UN 70th. We need to get right on this to reserve the room.
To do List
Cathy Corcoran will check out possible lunch providers. Eddie Ramirez will be part of our delegation to City Hall if the timing works out right. Roger will resubmit the letter to City Hall to the COO committees for everyone to look over. Roger and Mary Jane will work on lining up the Consulate Community. Roger will follow up on a couple contacts Mary Jane has made.
