Subtle Sexism
sum

Dear UN Women Executive Director Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka,

As a student, I know from experience that even in places like my high school, sexism is still prevalent. Just a couple examples: one of my classmates has labeled me as a "pretty girl." I've been asked by my little sister if I have a boyfriend, since she's been indoctrinated with the idea that girls are supposed to have them by high school. I've been told that I'm too ambitious, too powerful, and guys find it intimidating.

Sexism doesn't have to be as blatant as forced marriages or denied access to education, although those are some of its worst forms. Its subtler shapes include condescending remarks, casual judgments, and skewed beliefs.

We need your leadership, now more than ever, because sexism is still far from being eradicated, even in the most "progressive" places.
