Building Peace & the Party
California Peace Alliance Supporters,
With your help, we have garnered support by the California Democratic Party (CDP) for a U.S. Department of Peacebuilding (HR808/ DoP) and violence prevention in general. We will build on this at the upcoming CDP Executive Board meeting in Oakland, CA from July 11 - July 13, 2014 as we work to gain more cosponsors for DoP legislation, which is sponsored by Oakland Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CD13). We ask you to continue partnering with us in these efforts.
As you may know, in addition to networking with other groups, during the last four years we have worked closely with the CDP, which has incorporated peace into the Party and:
- Endorsed proposed legislation to create a cabinet-level U.S. Department of Peacebuilding
- Adopted a resolution in support of peacebuilding
- Incorporated into the 2012 and 2014 CDP Platforms peacebuilding principles, including language proposed by the CA Peace Alliance.
When we attend the CDP Executive Board meeting in July, the CA Peace Alliance will build upon these accomplishments. We will:
- Work to gain additional Congressional cosponsors for the DoP legislation
- Lobby to do this with members of Congress, other elected officials and CDP members
- Collect letters to members of Congress urging them to cosponsor the DoP legislation and the Youth PROMISE Act (HR1318, S1307/ YPA)
- Dialogue with attendees about the Peace Alliance, DoP, YPA, Restorative Justice and creating a culture of peace
- Attend caucus meetings, including the Progressive caucus meeting where Congresswoman Barbara Lee will speak.
We need your help:
- Volunteer - If you can volunteer to work with us at our booth and to network, please email Nancy (sunmntian@aol.com) as soon as possible with the date(s)/ time(s) you can be there. Please include you cell phone number. We especially need help on Saturday, July 12th. To facilitate the planning, please email your information by June 24th or sooner. If you can't confirm by that date, please let us know as soon as possible.
- Donate If you can donate any amount toward our booth fee and copying costs, please email sunmntain@aol.com and I will send you the check mailing address. Please make the check payable to Nancy Merritt and note on the check "CA PA Booth - 7/14 CDP."
