In some very good news, Bruce Knotts, Director of Unitarian-Universalist United Nations Office from New York City will speak at the morning service on October 19, 2014, UN Sunday at the UU Church.

Richard Halstead was mentioned as a possible for the pre-service Sunday morning Forum on Oct 19th.

Our breakout tables so far:

1) Animal Rights - person to be provided by Natalie Shuttleworth
2) Immigration - Rochelle Fortier
3) Homelessness - Sr Carmen Barrady of Faithful Fools Ministry
4) LGBT refugees - Galen Workman
5) Mass Incarceration - Corey Weinstein
6) Sex Trafficking - Glenda Hope of SafeHouse for Women Escaping Prostitution
7) Climate Action - Larry Danos
8) Peace & No Nukes - Roger Kotila
9) Torture - ? Liz thinks she may have someone
10) Women's Rights - ?

We formally OKd Corey Weinstein to lead a table on “Mass Incarceration” - Roger E. will let him know we are delighted he will be with us.

Roger E. will work to put together a Women’s Rights table.  Roger K. mentioned he had someone good in mind as possibility. Also try to bring in ACLU on civil rights.

On the important question of Shannon Biggs Keynote, we have not gotten back to her since she suggested she wanted to speak on the Rights of Nature.  The UN 69th committee agreed that this topic is too far afield from “Human Rights”.  Liz Cormier and Larry Danos will speak with Shannon and if she is not agreeable to speak on a subject attuned to our theme of Human Rights, then we will thank her, but let her know we will find someone else.  We actually have that “someone else” available, and that is Bruce Knotts.  Roger requested and the committee said OK, that if it comes to it, we will assure Shannon that we will make the agreed $100 donation to Global Exchange and that we would be very pleased in that case if she would still attend the luncheon on Oct 19, and head up a table on the subject of Rights of Nature.

Event details: We confirmed Mary Jane Mikuriya will MC the afternoon human rights luncheon. We confirmed speaker will begin at 1:00 for 20-25 minutes. We confirmed the event will end at 2:30. Tables will have signs for their topics and when the Keynote is concluded, half of the tables will move to the MLK room, where six tables with chairs will have been pre-arranged.  Badges will be provided for people to print their name and organization. Each table will write up a short description/conclusion about the topic with prioritized list of actions that people can take. These write-ups will be posted online.  Subcommittee of Mary Jane, Liz and Roger will go further into details.

There is the possibility that these outputs could be used in a follow-on meeting to come up with a one-page input to the upcoming Universal Periodic Review of the United States. The UPR is a function of the UN Human Rights Council.  Eliz and Roger will try to bring in Joshua Cooper of Hawaii, who is very knowledgable about the UPR and U.S. Treaty obligations in the realm of human rights.

We need to come up with $400-$600 upfront for luncheon costs. Melvin Starks will get us a menu.

Trilight, last meeting, had an idea for a survey questionnaire.  Roger E. will try to get in touch with him.

A Save the Date notice will be posted in the UU Church bulletin - that needs to be sent in Aug 15th - today.

Roger E. brought numbered tickets for inspection.  The general look was thought fine.  Several edits were suggested and accepted. The tickets are numbered and will be given out with the understanding that those taking the tickets will return either $10 per ticket or the tickets themselves.  We will register each person who takes tickets with contact info. Tickets will be ready by our Tuesday Aug 19th General COO meeting (MLK room at UU Church, doors open at 5:30, meeting from 6:00 to 8:00. Potluck).

Roger K. had the brilliant idea of a flag march from UN Plaza to the UU Church on Saturday Oct 18th, which we all liked.  We would end the march by setting up the flags in the UU Church for Sunday's event.  Interestingly Eastbay UNA is having its flag march at Jack London Square on that same Saturday the 18th of October.  Kinda neat that we have simultaneous flag marches on both sides of the Bay. This is something we can bring in volunteers for and the Saturday march will pretty well guarantee we sell out Sunday.  We thought we should have a good catchy flyer to give out for the flag march.  Roger E. will contact Pablo Castro to see if the flags could be made available for the Saturday march and if so will check out what is needed in the way of parade permits.

We need a good idea for the flyer - please post your thoughts.

Next UN 69th meeting Sep 4th, 6:00 PM at UU Church on Franklin at Geary.  Newcomers welcome.
