Despite it being Labor Day weekend eight people attended and were able to clear the ground so we know where we are headed.

Mary has provided an excellent structure for our organizing - see below - and will take on the coordinating role.  All major roles will need a back-up person, including hers.

We have a lot of ideas for the theme - see below. If Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka agrees to come and perhaps even if she does not, a women’s oriented celebration is a major possibility.

One really big conclusion: Of all things, we do not want the process to fail and make us sorry we ever began.  We are not beginning too soon, so things have to move right along. We will have “benchmarks” and if we do not meet them, we will retreat to a smaller event.  Right now we are thinking big - to fill up Herbst Hall and the Green Room at the War Memorial plus have an outside event to unveil the new “Birthplace of the UN” plaque and side events.  Our first benchmark: by the end of October at the latest, we need to have a theme, an agreed program, people for all key positions, lined up major co-sponsors and to have been confirmed for Oct 24, 2015 and paid our deposit for the War Memorial. 

A feasibility study is being conducted which will invite Nor Cal Chapters to participate. It is on the September 6, 2014, Nor Cal Meeting Agenda.

Next meeting late in September - stay tuned.

Ideas/questions to be kept in mind:

  • Possibility of the War Memorial Board itself being a listed sponsor
  • NGO outreach should showcase the original NGO Charter Sponsors
  • We should consider incorporating an IGMUN
  • Flag march as side event
  • Consular Reception at the Fairmont as a side event.
  • Everything has to be very transparent
  • Should participating organizations be expected to donate something?

To do:

  • Mary, prepare SurveyMonkey questionnaire that all those interested in UN 70th will answer so we understand our resources and what sub-committees people want to participate on.  Outreach to major resources to expand our membership in significant ways.
  • Victoria: share creating these notes; check out crowdfunding possibility for War Memorial deposit.
  • Roger: set up UN 70th group with subcommittees: Planning, Program, Finance, Fundraising, Communicatons, UNA NorCal, NGO Outreach, Legal, UNA-USA, WFUNA, Housing, Advisory.  Help put together these notes and then post them in the new UN 70th group. On Wednesday, Sep 3, check with Stephanie Smith of the Warm Memorial to get details about the deposit we will need to put down and if possible set a mid-October date for when we need to have the money.  How much?  Is it refundable as we believe? Setup COO Core Collaborators meeting to confirm the UN 70th and Mary’s role.
  • Tom Ray: set up web page on our sfbaycoo.org website.
  • Siva: Take meeting notes to the Global Marshall Plan group and see if GMP Eastbay wants to take part.
  • Herb, Pablo, Mary, Victoria, Roger - prepare to present at UNA-NorCal meeting on Sat, Sep 6.
  • Stephen McNeil: stay tuned in preparation for important committee work: fundraising, outreach.
