UN70 Millennium Development Goals Champion Awards
Presented to Congresswomen Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Lee on the occasion of the 70th Anniversary Celebration of the United Nations Charter Signing in San Francisco Thursday June 25, 2015 at the SF Main Library
==================================================
What: Presentation of two Millennium Development Goals Champion Awards – two awards given to recognize and outstanding leadership in supporting and advancing the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) over the past 15 years. The actual awards are two very nice plaques with special text inscribed.
Where: San Francisco Main Library - Skylight Gallery, Sixth Floor 100 Larkin St. (at Grove)
When: Thursday June 25, 2015 - Time TBD (1 hour) The day before the UN Charter Signing 70th Anniversary Celebration in San Francisco
Who - Presenting: RESULTS, ONE & the UNA Bay Area Council of Organizations
Who - Receiving: Congresswoman Nancy Pelosi & Congresswoman Barbara Lee
Event Format: Media event and photo opportunity awards presentation – followed by a brief reception with Bay Area senior staff of international development organizations with ties to the Millennium Development Goals.
Why: Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Lee have been true committed leaders in Congress in generating political support and funding for international development programs achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals. This includes funding for UN Agencies such as UNICEF, Child Survival and Basic Education accounts within the US foreign affairs budget, and the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, TB and Malaria.
While the Bay Area public is aware of the role these senior congresswomen play in local and national
programs, their key strategic leadership in support of the UN and its poverty-focused development agenda is largely unrecognized.
The goal of this media event and community reception is:
1. Recognition of Nancy Pelosi and Barbara Lee for their key strategic leadership in support of the UN MDGs over the past 15 years.
2. Thanking them on behalf of the local community of organizations advocating for the MDGs.
3. Creating awareness through the media for their championship of the MDGs and solutions for the needs of the world’s poorest people – and for the UN’s new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 15-year campaign, being launched in September.
