Dear Mr. President, Members of the United States Senate, Members of the United States House of Representatives, Senator Feinstein, Senator Boxer,
At our August 18, 2015, meeting of the Cooperation Circle entitled "Voices for a World Free of Nuclear Weapons," we discussed the statement by the three hundred and forty United States rabbis who endorsed the pending Iran Nuclear Treaty. Since we are a collection of religious leaders, diplomats, activists and interfaith leaders who meet each month to find avenues which might aid in the abolition of nuclear weapons, we unanimously voted to echo our Jewish sisters and brothers. We, too, endorse the pending Iran Nuclear Treaty.
We are one of seven hundred and twenty-five Cooperation Circles of the United Religions Initiative functioning in eighty-seven nations. Enclosed you will find our Call to Conscience statement, a recent article by two of our members and a complete list of our membership. In truth, we must admit that among our total membership, there is not unanimity on this matter. Nonetheless, at our August 18, 2015 meeting, all people present felt an urgency to make our voices heard.
In terms of morality and principled policies, we think that it is far better to negotiate nuclear de-escalation than to continue on the path of nuclear proliferation in Iran, with all of the inevitable military consequences that will follow.
We thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
The Rt. Rev. William E. Swing
President and Founding Trustee
