Hi Bob,
Thanks for commenting! I hope others will also take a look at Simpol and add their comments to this thread.
Before answering your critique, I want to give people a better idea of what Bunzl is aiming to do under the Simpol flag. The idea is for nations to agree on national policy changes to be implemented simultaneously at the global level. Simultaneous policy implementation.
Only policies that would be hurtful to the nations if implemented by each nation on its own come under the Simpol umbrella. This means binding global agreements where needed, but on all other matters, national sovereignty is not infringed.
To get the ball rolling, the global democracies are targeted. National citizens where there are elected national representatives are encouraged to get their representative to sign the Simpol Pledge: http://simpol.org/fileadmin/user_upload/General/MP_PPC_Pledge_Form_-_New.pdf. This pledge is easy to sign since it commits the representative only to support for the Simpol idea "in principle" and leaves open the exit door in case things develop in a direction the representative cannot support.
So there is something easy for Simpol supporters to do: encourage their reps to sign the pledge. And yes the overall idea is fairly simple, which makes it attractive.
I realize that in principle, the global chaos with everything connected to everything else means no global solution is going to be simple. But the difficulties will arise down the road as actual policies are negotiated. Our part is to get things moving, and in the process to build a Global Citizens Movement that will be open to all approaches, not just Simpol.
The big hurdle to any global solution is the lack of human unity, as you suggest when you say people "defy simple logic". Yes, we do! But I am convinced that we have plenty enough in common to forge that sense of human unity that is needed to underpin a Global Citizens Movement and the kind of international cooperation outlined by Bunzl. Voices of Humanity is the tool we can use.
Here's my 10 second elevator speech again: In the conversation between the communities of Planet Earth, women and men will use their collective voices to persuade the nations to cooperate. A kindly and intelligent human unity with diversity built-in is ours for the taking!!! Your participation could make the difference.
I'm going to follow up on this Simpol idea as best I can. Let's see how it goes. Please keep an open mind on the question.
