Today, I walked into physical therapy and was greeted by Ama and Irina with, "HAPPY INTERNATIONAL WOMENS DAY." "Yes, March 8!" I said. They informed me that in Russia IWD is a national holiday, and there is much celebration. Women do not go to work, and receive presents, always flowers. They pointed out the new orchid plant and mixed flower bouquets in the sitting room, and gave me a box of exotic Russian sweets when I left. They also said IWD was well known in Europe.
I was inspired and write this message to honor and celebrate the women of the world, their singular and collective voices, their dizzying profusion of beauty, their capacity for compassion loving kindness and their continuing struggle for human unity, gender equality and human rights.
I write this message for all my women friends, a few of my male friends, my daughter....and my husband who, though not a woman, believes women will conquer the world.
