Re: GENOCIDE ? IN RAKHINE STATE, MYANMAR - THINK AGAIN
sum

Thank you, Nwe OO!

The horrific events in Myanmar have careened to major disaster and there seems no solution in sight.

I have read the Kofi Annan commission report, which was published just before the latest outbreak of violence. It can be found here: http://www.rakhinecommission.org, Well worth reading for those who want an understanding of the multiple communities and issues involved. I come away with much respect for Kofi Annan and also for Suu Kyi for putting the commission together.

Something to note, though, the Rakhine Commission report was barred from referring to the Rohingyas by that name and had to say "Muslims". That inability of Myanmar to accept the Rohingyas as citizens underlies the whole conflict as I see it. The Commission report does call for establishment of citizenship for the Rohingya community, so it does not shy away from what would seem the only road forward.

I have to say that I do see the current situation as one of ethnic cleansing and unacceptable from the point of view of humanity. At the same time I think we have to realize there are other viewpoints, that of the Rakhine people is one and that of the large majority of Buddhist nationals of Myanmar is another. Fear and hatred combine with a sense of national solidarity against the Rohingya Muslims.

I appeal to the Voices of Humanity Cooperation Circle members reading these articles to add your voice!

As a side note, the Kofi Annan report includes Climate Change as one of the factors exacerbating the communal violence. Again - this has also been true of Syria.
