Re: My Smoky Mountains Smile for Nuclear Disarmament

Good article, George Wolfe. I hope others will read it, too.

The dangers of nuclear arms are clearer than ever with Trump's threats against North Korea. Now we have to add the possibility of mad men misreading each other to the terrorist and accident scenarios.

There is also the huge question of deterrence, which you address, and which needs to be addressed because that is the argument that the nuclear armed nations use for maintaining these civilization destroying weapons. It is certainly possible that without nukes, we would have had a major world war three with conventional weapons back in the 20th century. But there have been a number of close calls that together suggest we have been lucky to get to 2018.

With global warming and the threat of mass extinction we have entered a new era. Solutions to our global problems require a level of trust and cooperation between the nations that is not possible while the major nations threaten each other with horrifying weapons. These weapons signal that we live in an us-vs-them world, the opposite of the unity-and-diversity world we need so we can act together. For this reason, I think we have to build a sense of human unity to underpin both disarmament and collective global action, as on the UN SDGs, for instance.
