The Feb 2, 2018 Nuclear Posture Review from the Trump admin calls for lower-yield weapons as a new more usable option. The thinking is that lower-yield nuclear weapons can deter non-nuclear strikes against the U.S. and its allies. The U.S. would be more likely to use a low-yield nuke in response than a high-yield bomb. That is how the Mutual Assured Destruction (MAD) men think, and who knows? If they are right, then the U.S. will be more likely to make a first-use nuclear strike, taking us over the line into the unknown. On top of this, Trump seems all too nuke-happy, so we worry.
