I realized recently that "bringing the goals of the UN home to San Francisco" is too vague to be funded - one of those 4:00 am can't get to sleep again worries! I am glad to say that I have come up with a much more particular aim for our grant application - that is to persuade the SF Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution establishing a UN Goals Advisory Committee for the city. This advisory committee will be charged with the excruciating task of developing proposals for each of the UN Goals to be considered by the Board of Supervisors. We know from how detailed the SF CEDAW ordinance was that the wording of ordinances is quite beyond our two year collective impact project.
Letter of Inquiry
Collective Communication, Inc. (CCI) is a California nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status. We are seeking funding for a two year “collective impact” project to bring the goals of the UN home to San Francisco.
More particularly, the collective impact project will aim to have the San Francisco Board of Supervisors pass a resolution establishing a UN Goals Advisory Committee which will be charged with developing detailed proposals how each of the Goals of the UN may best be supported/implemented by the City. The proposed resolution will include clauses covering each of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Human Rights, CEDAW and nuclear disarmament, and a blanket clause covering all the other goals of the UN.
CCI has developed the “Voices of Humanity” (VoH) online social medium as an action oriented platform for human unity and diversity. VoH gives communities collective voices for the genders and ages as well as overall, thus building gender and age equality into the process. We already have a working online forum with monthly collective results and by the end of 2018 will have a “together and apart” discussion format whereby the nations will each have their own collective voices in alternation with the collective voices for humanity. In the first quarter of 2019 we will implement bottom up inter-community networking.
The together-and-apart format will also be ideal for “across the silos” partnerships, which makes VoH a promising candidate for the “continuous communication” component of a collective impact project. For the proposed San Francisco UN Goals project, CCI needs a suitable partner to be the backbone for the project. Would (name of funding org) be interested to receive a joint grant application from CCI and a suitable backbone partner? The grant would be for in the neighborhood of $250,000, with the backbone organization receiving $150k to staff up for a two year project, and CCI to receive $100,000 over the same two years for staff and programming support.
Success is virtually assured, since the cities of the world are moving towards adopting the SDGs in any case and they already support nuclear disarmament. With that initial success, tremendous opportunities will open up. The coalition created for the collective impact project will be the natural choice to become the new San Francisco UN Goals Advisory Committee. At the same time the newly unified UN Goals organizations of San Francisco will want to reach out to bring in the Bay Area, and VoH will be able to accomodate that expansion while also maintaining the local identities of each of the Bay Area cities. From there we will be in position to move to state, national and global levels with VoH as a tool that the UN will fund.
VoH is in need, too, of a $15,000 grant to fund a) continued software development through June of 2019 and b) a paid intern to help with outreach. May we send (name of funding org) a separate grant application for this amount?
