GetUp! is the largest activist group in Australia. Our local Action Group is very keen about Kitchen Table Conversations. GetUp!, like many organisations after our shocking election results, is reviewing its strategy. Our Action Group will suggest that GetUp! encourage its members to be citizen educators.
The thought behind this is that environmental-progressive messages fall on ‘unprepared minds’. Many people don’t really know why transformative change is needed, so the focus on ‘jobs and growth’ is appealing to them.
* The Findhorn Climate Change and Consciousness community is committed to transitioning to a life-affirming culture. There is an ongoing discussion about we should do. Mostly it’s bits and pieces, with little focus on how we affect mainstream thinking and feeling, but I am hanging in there.
* The CFO of a large marketing group in Brazil is interested in setting up a digital platform to organise local Great Transition Initiative hubs. Digital marketing is their specialty, so I’m interested to see how this progresses.
* A climate scientist interviewed by Jem Bendall observed that agriculture was impossible in the glacial period before our current temperate period. The climate was too variable. When climate mayhem fully kicks in, the survivors will be nomadic.
* The Roman die-off, when their transportation system broke down, must have been horrible – as starvation is horrible for people alive today.
* Richard Whitehurst has a gorgeous process for quickly bringing people to a sense that this Earth is our Home, and we should take care of her. Based on the ‘Overview Effect’, where astronauts were moved to awe and caring by seeing the Earth from space, Richard has a video and gentle guided visualisation and questioning process that imaginatively reproduces that experience (https://www.overviewinstituteaustralia.org/).
* If we succeed in switching to 100% renewable energy, will we still act as an insane species with a high probability of wiping ourselves out through nuclear war, species loss, and toxins in the food chain?
Let’s do our best to mobilize public will for transitioning to a life-affirming culture, rather than continuing on our present course of ecological self-destruction.
Cheers,
Andrew
