In 1953 President Eisenhower was supporting the French in Vietnam as they fought the Viet Minh to maintain control of the country. At Dien Bien Phu the French were going down. The U.S. National Park Service has this to say: “Many of Eisenhower’s advisors, including National Security Council (NSC) Chairman Admiral Arthur Radford, believed the only way to save the French was by dropping atomic bombs on their opponents. Eisenhower rejected this suggestion, arguing that nuclear weapons were too destructive to use in a limited conflict, and perhaps too politically damaging to use at all. “You boys must be crazy,” he said. “We can’t use those awful things against the Asians for the second time in ten years. My God.” Without support from either American ground forces or nuclear weapons, the French garrison fell to the Viet Minh on 7 May 1954.” https://www.nps.gov/articles/problemmassiveretaliation.htm
Now here’s a quote from Trump in Woodwards new book: “I have built a nuclear — a weapons system that nobody’s ever had in this country before. We have stuff that you haven’t even seen or heard about. We have stuff that Putin and Xi have never heard about before. There’s nobody — what we have is incredible,” Trump said. We can hope that Trump is at his usual bluffing game and when it comes down to it, if it ever does, he will not be the crazy boy.
