Re: More Prisons Create More Crime

San Francisco, where I live with my wife Sandy, is very much an anti-Trump city. People here think the Trump supporters cannot distinguish between fact and fiction. Yet when it comes to supporting our liberal District Attorney in his quest to reduce the jail population, they ignore the big picture facts which David Spero has written up so well.

It is a difficult problem. Back in the 80's there was a serious increase in crime, especially in the cities. This was in great part due to the lead in gasoline. A combination of racism, fear and the effect of greater incarceration produced even greater levels of inarceration. And the private jail systems made it worse.

Since the lead was removed from the gas, the crime rates, especially for violent crime, have gone down dramatically. But the effect of huge jail populations has held us back. It appears it will be a long slow process to get the numbers of jailed people down to a reasonable number. It will help if people understand what has been happening and support both liberal DAs everywhere and vote to put money into alternatives to prison. There is also plenty of need for volunteers.
