The UNDPP is requesting suggestions from civil society organizations for its New Agenda for Peace, which they are putting together for 2024. Here's what I have come up with.
A New Agenda for Peace
Thanks to the UN Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs for the New Agenda for Peace and for this opportunity to add our suggestions. I am writing as Executive Director of Collective Communication, Inc, (CCI) a California 501(c)(3) non-profit.
CCI has developed an online tool designed to underpin a massive global consciousness with gender and age equality built-in. Voices of Humanity (VoH) uses voting on messages to give communities each their own collective voice, capped by the collective voices of women, men, lgbtq, youth, middle-age, seniors and humanity-as-one. The VoH app is expected to be ready for release by Spring of this year.
Our analysis of the global situation is that nuclear weapons have made it impossible for the nations to cooperate fully on pressing global issues. Our approach will be a) to use the goals of the UN as a scaffold for bringing everyone together and b) to begin not at the national level, but rather by building a global network of cities that have officially adopted all the goals of the UN, including nuclear disarmament. We plan to begin with San Francisco. You can find our Draft Resolution for the San Francisco Board of Supervisors here: https://www.sfungoals.org/draft-resolution.
Keeping it short, then, our first suggestion is that the UN remake the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) to include all the goals of the UN for a global cities network. Without disarmament, the SDGs will not succeed, and the other way about, without leveraging the existing massive support for the SDGs, neither nuclear nor general disarmament is going to happen. The cities, being the targets and not themselves having nuclear weapons, are fine with the “all the goals of the UN” approach. A good possibility would be to look to the nations that have signed the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW) for funding of the global cities network.
Our second suggestion is that the UN support the roll out of Voices of Humanity as an experimental tool. It is worth a look for sure: https://voh.intermix.org. Please be sure to click the “Read more” button halfway down the page on the left. The idea of voting on messages opens up numerous possibilities. The VoH “Apart and Together” feature, for example, when applied to the goals of the UN will help with the “across the silos” problem. And when applied to the nations, guarantees each nation a collective voice of its own while at the same time allowing the nations to come together and explore possibilities of cooperating more fully.
