Today, with an increase in violence in the Hamas-Israel armed conflict, we can turn for inspiration to the ancient Egyptian goddess Ma'at who represented justice, harmony and balance. One worshiped the goddess Ma'at by living a life of justice, order, and equanimity.
To the extent that ancient Egyptian thought can be known, the emphasis was on harmony, unity, and mutual relationships among the currently living and those who had lived before. Ma'at was often represented in the judgement of those who had recently died, their soul and Ma'at in the balance. Equanimity is a state of calmness and serenity that maintains mental stability, especially under stress and in troubled situations - a mind without hostility.
While the current Egyptian government with its mass inprisonments and human rights violations is probably not a devotee of Ma'at, officials from Egypt were among the mediators which brought a week-long "humanitarian pause" to the fighting in the Gaza Strip and an exchange of hostages held by Hamas and Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.
Ma'at was also thought to be the goddess who held Upper and Lower Egypt together - an appropriate symbol for the necessary peaceful relations among Israelis and Palestinians.
