As the year 2024 starts, there is still continuing violence between Israelis and Palestinians - ignited by the 7 October attack by Hamas and then fueled by Israeli retaliation in Gaza. The conflict Russia-Ukraine grinds on with many killed, wounded and uprooted but with no negotiations in sight. With less media attention the armed conflict in the eastern zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo, increasingly involving Rwanda, continues as is also true of the armed conflicts in Myanmar, Syria and Yemen.
Within many European countries, immigration from Africa, the Middle East, and Asia - real and imagined - is viewed by some as a threat to a relatively homogeneous society. Immigration, which is neither safe nor orderly, has become a strong political issue. It is within this world framework of violence, fears, and hatred that we must make proposals for the resolution of conflicts.
Each situation presents complexities. There are seldom easy answers. Conflict often breaks down the few channels of communication which exist among protagonists. Fortunately, throughout the world, there are individuals and groups working to establish communications - a network of light with a sense of responsibility for our planetary home. We must make efforts to widen this network.
There is a synergy through our actions which can produce unforeseen results. We need to find new ways of approaching the challenges we face. Much will depend on the quality of leadership and the information which leaders are given. Thus, at the start of the New Year, we pledge to develop analysis and information which will be a real force for positive change.
