Gaia is the name of the classic Greek goddess of the earth. Increasingly today individuals call upon the "Spirit of Gaia" to heighten their awareness of their connections with the earth and to fill themselves with love and compassion for all living creatures. Gaia is the symbol of a purposeful spiritual presence at work in the world, a guide for planetary evolution and a focus for cooperative action for ecologically-sound development. The earth is, like the goddess, worthy of respect and honor.
The idea of the "Spirit of Gaia" heightens our awareness of ecological and environmental resposibilities. We are inspired to take cooperative action to meet the ecological challenges which face the world society. The "Spirit of Gaia" suggests a sense of direction, a role in which we can all act together and develop a sense of community.
Today, many people live in a fragmented world. There is a need to discover new ways of being together and to take creative actions. We are realizing that in an interconnected world not only are problems interwoven but solutions are interconnected as well. Thus, we need a symbol such as Gaia for cooperation and mutual support - the base of our common effort.
