22 April is Earth Day, begun 55 years ago first in the USA on the initiative of Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson who called for teach ins on environmental protection at universities. "Teach ins" had been an effective tool in the protests against the US-led war in Vietnam.
From its U.S. start, today Earth Day is a world-wide event and draws participants from many age groups. The challenges which the World Society faces to protect the Earth requires actions at the local, the national and the world level. There are many dangers linked to the impact of climate change, such as greatly increased migration.
We rejoice in the beauty and wonder of the land, sky, water, and life in all its diversity. We depend upon the Earth and upon one another for our common existence. Thus, this Earth Day, let us strive for actions to protect Nature in which we can all advance together safely.
