Iran: Human Rights Focus: Action Needed
sum

After the U.S.-brokered ceasefire between Israel and Iran, the Iranian government has begun a sharp crackdown on those Iranians the government considers as "internal enemies" or possibly "spys for Israel".  Some 1,500 Iranians have been arrested, including intellectuals, former political prisoners, members of Iran's religious minorities such as the Baha'is and ethnic minorities such as those in Kurdish-majority areas.

Some of those arrested have been charged with "national security offences" - a broad but ill-defined accusation used to imprison dissidents.  The vague language would equate online activism and information sharing with terrorism and treason, leading to a possible sentence of life imprisonment and even death.  These measures have created a climate of fear.

Therefore, the Association of World Citizens has joined with 11 other non-governmental organization in consultative status with the United Nations in a joint statement to the U.N. Human Rights Council which is meeting from 16 June to 11 July 2025 in Geneva, Switzerland.  The joint statement is titled "The Islamic Republic of Iran: Political Prisoners at  Risk of Execution".  The joint statement is an official document of the Council: A/HRC/59NGO/248

The Association of World Citizens has a long-standing policy calling for the abolition of the death penalty.
