21 September is the United Nations-sponsored International Day of Peace, first celebrated in 1982 at the start of the U.N. General Assembly. This is a critical time with escalating violence in the Gaza Strip, the ongoing devastation of the Russia-Ukraine armed conflict, militarized violence in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Spending on the military is increasing in many countries.
As peacebuilders, we must not expect that government leaders will bring us a world of peace and harmony. The dangers facing us are real. Thus, we must increase our efforts to make non-governmental organizations strong agents of peacebuilding. Greater cooperation is needed. We must reach a wider number of readers and increase positive actions.
