These days mark the Hindu festival of Light, Deepavali (also written as Diwali). As there are Indian communities in many countries, the festival is being celebrated in a good number of countries always with the presence of lights.
Originally, in India, it was oil lamps that were lit, a symbol of the dispelling of ignorance by the light of knowledge, a light kindled within the heart.
Light is a value in many cultures, a time for a reaffirmation of values, a return of balance. In these times when there is armed violence and repression in many parts of the world, we can all join in the Indian song for Diwali:
"O Light, Awaken hearts to truth and right,
From shadows deep, let wisdom rise,
like golden lamps beneath the skies.
Let kindness bloom, let hatred cease,
Let every home be filled with peace.
As stars adorn the velvet dome,
May light and love fill every home."
