West Bank Tensions Grow: Positive Actions Needed
sum

Tensions grow during the olive harvest of October and November in the West Bank of Israel.  The tensions are basically between the Palestinians who live there and the some 400,000 Israeli settlers who have created settlements near Palestinian villages.  Olives and olive oil are important elements of the Palestinian economy on the West Bank.

Some Israeli settlers cut olive trees and destroy harvested olives. Efforts have been made by Israeli peace groups to protect the Palestinian olive pickers.  However, the Israeli police have prevented the members of the peace groups from reaching the Palestinians needing protection.

Positive efforts must be made to reduce these tensions and to create Palestinian-Israeli communities in which persons can live together in peace.
