NGOs Call for U.N. Action on Lebanon Conflict
sum

The armed conflict in Lebanon is multidimensional and growing more violent as the conflict spreads to more areas of the country.  Non-governmental organizations in consultative status with the United Nations, such as the Association of World Citizens, are calling for speedy United Nations action.

Israel's current attacks in Lebanon against the armed militia Hezbollah is a second front in the U.S. - Israeli war with Iran.  Hezbollah fired rockets at Israel in support of Hamas.  Hamas in the Gaza Strip is also backed by the Iranian government.

Today, in Lebanon, more than a 1,000 persons have been killed and a million persons displaced in a country of six millions persons. The Israeli attacks may be the beginning of an Israeli invasion and occupation of southern Lebanon.

The political - strategic situation in the wider Middle East is complex.  U.S. military forces have been sent to the area, a possible prelude to a U.S. ground attack on Iranian installations.  There is also a possibility of anti-Iranian  Kurdish forces living in Iraq being used in a  ground attack on Iran.

In light of the dangers and uncertainties, non-governmental organizations are calling for action by the United Nations.  There are some possibilities of U.N. mediation and good  offices.  We must support these NGO calls for U.N. action.
